Body Positivity vs. Fitness Goals: Finding the Balance

In today’s world, the concepts of body positivity and fitness goals often seem to be at odds. On one side, we have the powerful message of self-love: we are beautiful just as we are, created in the image of God, and deserving of love regardless of our physical appearance. On the other side, there's the equally important message of striving for improvement: living the healthiest life possible for ourselves and those we care about.

As a weight loss and fitness coach, I've seen how these ideas can complement each other, creating a balanced and fulfilling approach to life.


Imagine your body as a classic car, a stunning vintage model with timeless beauty and charm. You cherish it because of its history, its unique features, and its inherent value. However, to keep this classic car running smoothly and efficiently, regular maintenance is essential. Similarly, we should love our bodies because they are part of us, a gift from the creator, and worthy of respect and care.


But loving something also means wanting the best for it, and that involves taking steps to maintain and improve it.


Loving Yourself as You Are


Body positivity starts with recognizing and celebrating our intrinsic worth. This means appreciating the body we were given and understanding that we are valuable just as we are. We are, after all, image bearers of our creator. This divine connection reminds us that our worth isn’t tied to our physical appearance or our ability to fit into societal standards of beauty. Self-love means treating ourselves with kindness and compassion, just as we would treat a cherished friend or loved one.


However, self-love doesn’t mean complacency. It’s about accepting where we are now while also being open to growth and improvement. This brings us to the second part of the equation: our fitness goals.


Striving for Improvement


While body positivity is about acceptance, fitness goals are about aspiration. They involve setting targets to become healthier, stronger, and more capable. Striving for physical improvement isn't about rejecting who we are; it’s about honoring our potential and making the most out of the life we’ve been given.


Living healthily isn't just for our own benefit. Our health impacts those around us – our families, friends, and communities. By striving to improve our well-being, we set a positive example and can better support and inspire others. It’s about creating a ripple effect of wellness that extends beyond ourselves.


Balancing Self-Love and Self-Improvement


Balancing self-love and self-improvement requires a holistic approach. It’s about understanding that we can love ourselves and the bodies we were born with while also recognizing our potential for growth. This balanced perspective is the healthiest outlook we can have on life. It’s like being both the caretaker and the mechanic of our classic car – we appreciate its beauty and history, but we also want to ensure it runs smoothly and efficiently.


In practical terms, this means setting realistic fitness goals. We set them not because we don’t like ourself - we set them because we love ourself.


Body Positivity Balance


Embracing body positivity and pursuing fitness goals are not mutually exclusive; they are complementary aspects of a healthy, fulfilling life. By loving ourselves as we are and striving to become the best version of ourselves, we honor the gift of life and the bodies we’ve been given. It’s a journey of continuous growth and self-discovery, where acceptance and aspiration go hand in hand.
